Every once in a while there are Statistics Departments established (and disestablished unfortunately). In the UC system, we recently had departments created at UCSC, UCI, and (in 1998) at UCLA. This presentation reviews what has happened at UCLA, what strategies we have followed, what we want to happen in the future, and what we have learned from the experience.
