This thesis is composed of two major components. First, it examines and compares the old ways with the new trends in the teaching of statistics, particularly in the areas of real datasets, technical writing and computer technology. Second, it assesses to what extent a lower division undergraduate Statistics class (Statistics 10) at UCLA complies with the new trends in the teaching of statistics by analyzing questions in the sections on design of experiments, exploratory data analysis, sampling and hypothesis testing from eighteen examinations provided by six instructors. Results show that students in this class are taught to write analytically and engage in upper-level critical thinking. Overall, the class is in compliance with the new trends in the teaching of statistics.
